I actually listened to this book on tape, but I enjoyed it. Of course, I was disappointed in the movie...

Received by Miss-Owl. :) Thanks, Piper79! Perfect timing - leaving in a few days for a two week trip to Thailand. That's... eighteen hours of uninterrupted reading time!

Journal Entry 5 by Miss-Owl on Friday, October 14, 2005
Thank you for sharing this, Piper79 - a wonderful read which I enjoyed immensely: simultaneously haunting and haunted - by the inescapable, indomitable spirit of King Lear. Compelling, disturbing and sinister by turns - like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Will stay far away for the movie - thanks for the warning. :)

Sending to SudoKris when I receive the address.

Journal Entry 6 by Miss-Owl on Wednesday, October 19, 2005
Sent to SudoKris... at least, I'm pretty sure that's where it is! (There's something to be said for sending only one book at a time at the post office.)

Enjoy!

This is a fantastic book!
A powerful and complex story, told in a low voice; when some of the most terrible things happen, it’s told in just a few words, so those parts I had to read twice to be sure about what was told. This low voice reflects the woman that tells us this story, a woman who has had to adapt for her survival and as soon as she raises her voice she gets to be a bad girl.

I think this story really shows how inheritage and social structure affect people and how hard it can be for women in a very patriarchal world to live a life with both self-respect and dignity, and to be accepted as equals.
As I said before, it’s a complex story; it also gave me a lot of other issues to reflect upon.

I am so glad I got to read this book and I will look for more books by Jane Smiley.

Tomorrow I will send this book to –Psyke-.
