Like Agnes of God, Mariette either has or has not experienced the touch of the Divine. She either is or is not visited by visions, either does or does not hear the voice of God, either will or will not convince those around her that she is exceptional and holy.
The story, weaker than in Agnes, is in the reactions of the ones around her - the Sisters who believe in her or do not, the priest who hears her confessions and reads her thoughts, the Mother Superior who has the care of the entire convent in her trust.
Moody and atmospheric it is, evoking a simpler time, and bringing the possiblity of miracles to a town in upstate New York in the early years of the Twentieth Century.
*Special note - praise for the depiction of the day of a cloistered nun with its regimented hours of work and prayer.
