Just wasn't my thing. This book seemed to drag on forever without saying a thing. It was one big circle from beginning to end.
I should always avoid books with a lot of published hype, as they never seem to live up to my expectations... That was an understatement in this instance. I couldn't wait to finish this in the hope that something would explain the reviews and commendations.
I intensely disliked many of the characters or despised their flaws. The plot dragged a long barely fleshing out the intracacies of a marginal story line and irritating mannerisms. Too much black and white seemed to be the theme. Stereotypical and blase, and yet even when the plot sped up and you expected action, the author chose to state the action before taking it on, ruining any chance of excitement from the unknown.
The whole book was predictable to the extreme. It was like a how to speech...Introduction, state your points and topics, cover your points and topics, reiterate the points and topic in the conclusion. BLAH!

Hey--Thanks so much! This was a great surprise from my wish list! I also home that I like the book better than you did--I sometimes like a "quiet" book, for this one the cultural details are what I'm most interested in. Maybe it will not disappoint!
I haven't been able to read enough for quite a while now, but I hope to read this right after I finish "The Bean Trees".
