Bought second hand. In decent condition. It was originally a 32nd birthday present for someone called Stephen.
A school in Dublin in the 1970s. Raphael Bell the headmaster doesn't like the way education has changed since he started teaching. Malachy Dudgeon is a new teacher who can't control his classes and embodies much of what Bell hates. Both men let their problems with teaching take over their lives, poisoning their relationships and driving them into mental illness. The story is engagingly told and there are wonderful moments - some of the descriptions of young love for example and also Malachy's misunderstanding with a prostitute. However for me it wasn't the comic masterpiece that many critics aclaim it as.
