The Robber Bride
9 journalers for this copy...
Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride is inspired by "The Robber Bridegroom," a wonderfully grisly tale from the Brothers Grimm in which an evil groom lures three maidens into his lair and devours them, one by one. But in her version, Atwood brilliantly recasts the monster as Zenia, a villainess of demonic proportions, and sets her loose in the lives of three friends, Tony, Charis, and Roz.

I had a really hard time getting through this book, I had to force myself not to put it down because I wanted to know if the story had some kind of point. In my opinion it hasn't, we get to know the three women and their relationships with Zenia, and that's it. Zenia's the villain, but what's surprising is how she could manipulate these three women, Charis didn't surprise me, she was so weak, but Tony and Roz too? How could they not see it coming? And how could they almost fall for her schemes twice?
After reading The Handmaid's Tale I was so looking forward to this book and it was a real disappointment, I couldn't get into the plot and I didn't care for any of the characters. I still want to read other books by this author but from now on I'll tread carefully! ;o)
I'll be passing this book on to PA so she'll give it to Elsita, the next in line.

For days I couldn't think of nothing more than Zenia and the story of Tony, Roz and Charis with her...
Now it's over...
Thanks for sharing, aneca!
The book will be passed over to the next in line, Aropereira, as soon as I get the adress.

Sent today to kizmiaz, as Aropereira is to busy to read...
Got it today, thank you Elsita. I still have one to finish before I start on this one but it won't take long.
Margaret Atwood seems to have a way of writing about women that is very appealing to me (a guy), she really goes for the emotional/rational dilemma in a non weeping-your-eyes-out way. It never gets mushy and that’s great.
The way Tony’s, Charis’s and Roz’s stories are told is very clever but sometimes it made me wish that she would get on with it already.
These three characters fragilities (mainly because of their background) ring very true and the plot itself doesn’t sound too improbable, so I found it very easy to jump right into the story.
As for Zenia… what a character. Halfway thru the book I was already wishing I could get my hands on her…neck, and wring it slowly but surely. She really brings out the other characters, a genuine Villain (with a capital V).
This is the third book I’ve read by this author and I’m already looking forward to the next one.
Gone today (06.06.2006) to Heaven-Ali (xanapeq asked to trade places with Heaven-Ali).

This hasn't been my favourite Margaret Atwood book, but it is a well written engrossing read nevertheless. I found the three distinct characters of Tony, Ros and Charis were brilliantly drawn, although I found it harder to get a handle on Zenia. Like another journaller has said I'm not certain what the point was - if there was one - maybe its simply to do with how the three women deal with Zenia ultimately, and what they have that she doesn't, and the lessons that they Tony, Ros and Charis can take from that.
Xanapeq has asked to be skipped altogether as Druisilamac is next I have sent the book on to her today.

Caught this book in the post this morning. Thanks to anceca and Heaven-Ali for sharing :-) I have a few other books in front of this so I shall get round to this shortly.
First of all, may apologies for holding onto this book for so long. But it was worth it :-)
I enjoyed reading about Tony's story mainly because she is a historian, a career option I have considered. I was enjoying reading this book so much that I was staying up very late indeed to finish chunks of it. However, it did towards the end for me. Roz seemed to annoy me and I didn't find her very likeable at times. However, her back story was extremely fascinating and I'm still not 100% sure what her father was up to during the war.
Roz provided a good comparison between the 'First' and 'Second' wave of feminists. Her descriptions of what the 'Older' feminists were like, and her distaste for them, reminded me of my own opinions on certain areas of feminism. Like others have said, this does not beat The Handmaid's Tale or The Blind Assassin. But those are pretty worthy titles to live up to!
I'll pass this along to Karenlea once I have an address. Once again, thanks for sharing!

I posted this off to Karenlea yesterday via surface mail :-)
Caught!!! I have a few rays/rings ahead of it, but I should be able to start it soon. Thank you for sharing!!!
It took me a few chapters to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. My favorite parts were actually when the girls were younger. I started to find myself more interested in the individual characters, rather than the story of Zenia and the general mystery of the book. It was creepy at times too, as Atwood novels can be!!!
I will be posting this book to the next reader tomorrow afternoon.
Thank you to Aneca for sharing this book!!!

Oh my god!! I am soooo sorry!! I just found this book hiding in my apt in the pile of stuff that had yet to be put away from when I moved in. I am so sorry. I haven't read it yet, but since I've been (inadvertently) hogging it for several months now, I'm going to PM the next person and send it on its way when I get a reply, regardless of having read it. Again, I am so sorry!!!
Holy cow. I have had this book nearly a year!! Since November. What a bad bookcrosser :( I promise, it is in the mail as we speak. Dropped at the post office before 4pm this Thursday afternoon. My truest and sincerest apologies to everyone waiting for this book. I am so sorry.
