I was a big fan of the Baby-Sitters Club when I was eight and nine, and re-reading this, I can remember why. This was my favorite of the Baby-Sitters books (of which I had quite a few). It is very readable, it is adventurous and thoughtful, and the protagonists are basically admirable. Is it Tolstoy? No. But that's okay, because Tolstoy didn't make a big dent when I was eight.
