I read this late last year (2004) and was extremely disapointed. I was expecting a strong rebellious female lead. Everything in the book implied as much! Then I got to the end to discover that the main character was just a wimp that didn't want to own up to her life, let alone deal with it.

I'm not sure why I still have it on my shelf, other than the fact that I have a degree in English and this book is supposedly a classic.

This arrived yesterday, thanks a lot BooksAndJava! I'll try and read it soon, but TBR are piling up...

I liked the way the story is told, its imagery and metaphors, the way the main character eveolves and realizes there's so much more than what she's had so far... and I was starting to enjoy her new ways of life and was wondering how far she would go...when the novel ended. A bit too abruptly and unexpectedly, I think (the fact that this edition has got so many more pages of notes & commentary at the end of the book tricked me, too). I was disappointed, I was expecting a brighter ending for a character that seems so resolute up to that point.
