This is a typical clever layered book of BB’s historical-fiction-type, although fictionalising less of a public event than the Titanic or Crimean War. I’m not sure how much of the ‘Stockwell Tragedy’ is true, John Watson brutal killing his wife, nee Anne Armstrong. The slaying itself is a bit confused and comes at the end of a long history of the marriage, from the staid Victorian courtship by letter, to the gradual erosion of any sense of love or mutual respect, and eventual temporary insanity or calculated murder…the jury errs towards the latter, although very sympathetic to Watson’s circumstances. There are some interesting asides about the nature of ‘melancholia’ as a categorisation of depression, and the workings of an unequal partnership, vis-à-vis a man and a woman! “She had overestimated his capacity for understanding; he had always underestimated her capacity for feeling.” To be fair, you probably need to be a Bainbridge fan to stick with this, not a page-turner by any means, but then she is always interesting, different and challenging for the reader.
