Journal Entry 3 by weebly from Hartwell, Northamptonshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, February 2, 2005
Just arrived - many many thanks. I have actually read almost all of the books sent to me by bookcrossers as I have been so good at not signing up to rings and rays - so this book should be read and released quite soon! ((Famous last words I know!) Also thanks for the book plates - they are lovely - I will get a cheque in the post straight away.

I must say I struggled with this book - maybe I am not familiar enough with the areas they are talking about - despite having West Country connections. I put the book down for a week or so while a couple of other books passed through my hands - and I read the 2nd half in about 2 nights - with a little torch in bed last night as I have a stinking cold and can't sleep!
Thanks for sharing - as Jo Brand says - it fills you with nostalgia for your childhood - but relief that it is long over!

The blurb on the back hit a chord as I grew up in a Polish family in the 1950s feeling excluded from "Englishness" and yet never feeling Polish either and caught as an outsider between the two cultures. I shall be interested to compare notes with Meera Syal.
I really enjoyed this book. It had many amusing moments and excellently observed descriptions of life in a West Midlands village in the 1960s and how a Meena, from a Punjabi family reacted to it and to her own home environment.
I finished this on the way to Iceland and am releasing it in Rejkjavik
