This novel is not for the faint of heart. Mickey Sabbath is one of the most despicable characters I have ever encountered. He is a self-serving bastard who loves no one but himself. Actually, let me take that back. He loves some ghosts. Over the course of the novel we discover what happened in his childhood that made him such a tormented being. Mickey lives in Podunk, New England, in a self-imposed exile, due to his failures as a man, as a professional, as a human being. The book kicks off with the death of his nymphomaniac girlfriend Drenka (beware: if vivid sexual descriptions make you uneasy, run in the opposite direction of this book). Drenka’s death sends Mickey into a wallowing spiral, and the announce of the funeral of an old NYC friend, whom he hasn’t seen in 30 years, gives him the perfect excuse to escape. While in NYC he creates mayhem wherever he goes. He antagonizes all those who give him their time, money and attention. His trip through memory lane takes him to the Jersey shore, where he grew up. All along the trip there is a lot of retrospective narrative. The low point for me was the part about his wife Roseanne going to an alcoholism recovery center, and Mickey’s discovery of her journals and the awful notes he wrote in them. Mickey ends up back in Podunk after his long journey, for an abrupt ending that after all seemed the perfect one.

I did not like this book, but I realize that it was very well written and that Philip Roth is a fascinating author. I shall try to read other books by him (this was my first).
