Los Angeles, 1958: A city on the make. A boom town at the edge of a new era ripe for plunder.
Lieutenant Dave Klein: in turn a lawyer, bagman, slum landlord, mob killer. Klein stands at the centre of a complex web of plots where violence and death will intersect.
James Ellroy has a fantastic writing style.

Arrived yesterday, I look forward to reading it thanks Milliejinx.

I've been meaning to read something by James Ellroy for a while but was unfortunately a little disappointed. I found his writing style difficult to get into and consequently found the book a bit of a trawl. By the end I didn't care what happened to any of the characters and finished it more because I felt I should than anything else.
Definatly not one for me I'm afraid.

Got this in the mail today. As I've got another two bookring books ahead of me, I'll try to get to this once I'm done with the other two. Thank you for including me!

I apologize that I cannot finish reading this but I've decided to send it on. The book's writing style is too different and unique for my taste. I must admit that half the time I cannot get into the book because I was busy trying to figure out his prose. Thank you for including me though! :-)

Received in the mail this morning. From the previous BXers review it might be a bit of a difficult read so I think I'll go through a couple of easier books sitting on my TBR pile first then I'll get onto this one. Watch this space...
Ok all done and read! see my comments in my release note below.

On its way to kizmiaz and sunny Lisbon tomorrow. I had been wanting to read James Ellroy for a while as there's been so much said and written about him. I must admit that it was a bit of work getting into the book. This is not airport crime literature and his style is pretty full-on. I enjoyed it but felt it was more like reading a classic than some crime novel. His style is quite incredible and allows him to pack so much action and thought between the pages that I lost the plot a few times and had to go back a few paragraphs and start again! I'll definitely read more of his books as I'm quite hooked now, but I think I'll have to be in the right mood. Thanks Shimmy-crazy for organising this bookring!

Just got it, thanks Jean-Sol, for the bookmarks too.
Wow! This was certainly different.
At first I confess that it took a while to get into the writing and the action, the way this story is written gives such a sense of speed, kind of cinematic but it’s not easy, not only does the author abuses the slang but he also writes it in a very unusual way, it reminded me of Elmore Leonard.
I liked this book and felt the plot was tight and dizzying; the pace was amazing and the characters very good, even though every one of them is a scumbag.
The descriptions of L.A.’s seedier side of life are very realistic and the way the author unrolls this twisted and complex plot is really worth the read, even if it’s not an easy job at first.
I’ll be looking forward to read some more books by this author.
Bug2004 asked to be skipped and rebeccaljames asked to be skipped too.
