This is the first of three volumes of historical fiction mixed with a bit of science fiction and a touch of alchemy. Actually this volume contains three "books" within its covers. I would warn you to keep track of the dates at the beginning of each chapter because the story line does bounce back and fourth in time throughout the three sections. The book starts, for example in 1713 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony then quickly bounces to 1655 in Cambridge (the one in England - the one in Massachusetts was known as Newtown at that time). Some of the people who show up in the story line include Robert Hooke, Issac Newton, Samuel Pepys, Antoine Rossignol (who is a cryptologist, not a ski maker) and John Churchill. A really interesting book, but drags for my point of view. I doubt that I will read the later volumes of the trilogy, though I may surprise myself.
