This charming (though slightly battered) little book contains a collection of Gorey illustrations of cats [very cute] and murderesses [bleakly funny, in the best Gorey tradition]. The book appears to be rather hard to find, and I'm hanging on to my copy for now; however, in the last year or two, the "murderesses" illustrations have appeared in calendar form, and interested parties may be able to find them that way.

Sample cat: "Spectral cat appearing in the air above a croquet wicket", with illustration showing precisely that.

Sample murderess: "Natasha Batti-Loupstein, pulverized a paste necklace and sprinkled it over a tray of canapes." (You'll have to imagine the accompanying illustration - a classic Gorey heroine, 20s-vamp style, smirking over the tray of deadly appetizers...)

[There's a TV Tropes page on Gorey and his work, with some entertaining tidbits. And if you have a chance to visit the museum/gift shop at the Edward Gorey House on Cape Cod, do take the time!]
