"Round-heeled" is an old-fashioned term for a promiscuous woman of easy virtue. It's a surprising way for a respectable English teacher of a certain age, with a passion for the novels of Anthony Trollope, to describe herself, but then that's just the first of many surprises to be found in this funny, poignant memoir. Inspired by Eric Rohmer's film "Autumn Tale", Jane Juska, a smart, energetic divorcee, decided she'd been celibate too long, and placed a personal ad in "The New York Review of Books". The response was overwhelming, and Juska took a sabatical from teaching to meet some of the men who replied. Since her ad made it clear that she wasn't expecting just hand-holding, her dates zipped from first base to the full monty in record time. Juska, in documenting her exploits, reveals the fact that older single people are just as eager for sex and intimacy as their younger counterparts. "

While I enjoyed Jane's story of trying to find a sexual connection in her middle age together with the other pieces of her life that she shared, this didn't strike me as being particulary well written.
I had difficulty following at times and I felt that it often seemed laboured and perhaps could have been edited better.

Nevertheless I was entertained and it was especially comforting (or perhaps disturbing) to note that women can be as clueless about men at 66 as they are at 16, 26 and 36. I hope she has found what she is looking for.

I quite enjoyed this. I liked the way she tied in various elements of her childhood, parents and life experiences with her contemporary attitude to sex, men and relationships.

In truth, her ad for men is only a catalyst for her to examine her own life and analyse exactly what she is looking for. Her encounters with these strangers is rather amusing but it is clear she is a strong, intelligent and feisty female.

I liked her passion for literature and admired her commitment to teaching, especially in the prison. Not quite the sordid sexual exploits the cover would have you believe, but I'm sure it helped push sales over the counter!
