Well written, though a bit bloodier than some of the later ones. First book in the series.

Off to CheriePie for book ring rescue. :)

Journal Entry 5 by CheriePie from Campbell, California USA on Wednesday, November 9, 2005
Mucho thanks to GABAGirl for sending me this to rescue my stalled Guilty Pleasures bookring. (That copy isn't really lost or stalled, but will be spending 4 months traveling from Aussie to Canada then another month or more traveling back to Switzerland, while the 2nd book in the series, The Laughing Corpse, also a bookring of mine, will have since caught up and passed it. So this copy will allow the remaining Guilty Pleasures ring participants to read the books in order as originally planned.) I'll create a separate journal entry with the revised list order for this copy and point the other to it.

Thanks again GABAGirl! And the rest of the readers from my original Guilty Pleasures ring thank you too!! :)

Journal Entry 6 by CheriePie from Campbell, California USA on Thursday, November 10, 2005
This is a 2nd copy of this book used to revive my existing Guilty Pleasures bookring for the remaining International participants.

If the original copy of the book that started this ring makes it back to me, then I will not require this copy back and it'll become more like a bookray instead of a ring. However, I didn't want to confuse things too much by announcing this 2nd copy as a ray since the original book and all the others in the series following it are all rings.

Ring Participants (last modified 14-Jun-2006)
· Sunneschii, Switzerland (ship Europe)
· Auglaise, Wales, UK (ship Intl/surface) acquired own copy
· sweetf, UK (ship Intl/surface)
· Margih, Finland (ship Europe)
· CandyDarling, Finland (ship Intl)
· jessicaloveyou, Singapore (ship Intl) <== current reader
· Withoutwings, FL, USA (ship Intl) moved back to original ring as no response from jessica

The rest of the rules below have been taken directly from the original ring:

Starting a BookRing for the first 4 books in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. See the forum posting at http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/20/1318548 for details and links to the offered titles.

PM me if you'd like to join. Be sure to specify which rings you want to join since each book will be shipped separately, as well as your shipping preferences. If you're joining the ring after it's already started it's journey, know that your place in the list will be determined based on your geographic location in conjunction with what is best for the other participants. While I'll certainly take your shipping preferences into account during list ordering, I don't like to always stick the same person with International shipping costs every time. So if you're going to participate in the rings for the entire series, at least 10 of which will be International rings, you should plan to have to ship Internationally at least once, unless there are enough others to pass the cost around to.
  • The above list order may be modified at any time to accomodate new participants or those who wish to leave the ring. So you should always refer to the list included in this journal entry before mailing the book out after you've finished with it.
  • After messaging the next person in the list for their address, you should allow at least a week for a reply (to allow for vacations). You may want to send more than one PM if they don't reply to the first one since I've experienced firsthand issues of BookCrossing PM's not being delivered. In Search Of (ISO) posts in the Bookring Forum also work well. If they haven't replied after 1 to 1-1/2 weeks, skip them and move on to the next person in the list.
  • Please post a journal entry here (1) when you first receive the book so we all know it has arrived safely, and (2) after you've finished reading it and are ready to send it along. Of course, please include your thoughts and opinions on the book itself too. :)
  • For courtesy sake, please try not to hang on to this book for more than 4-6 weeks as others are also waiting to read it. If you don't think you can get to the book in that timeframe, you can request to be skipped over and added to the end of the ring instead. Just use your best judgement so as not to hold up the ring.
  • Remember that at the end of the list, THIS BOOK SHOULD BE RETURNED TO ME, not released into the wild. I enjoy rereading my favorite books over time, and lend them out to other people in my life too, who are not necessarily members of BookCrossing. this may not be applicable for this 2nd copy.

THANKS AND HAPPY READING!

Ok.. first of all: When do I get the second book?

I really enjoyed reading this one. It wasn't a very intelligent and demanding read, but great fun! I like Anita, I like Jean-Claude... it's much better than Buffy!

Thank you very much for this ring, CheriePie!!

This came while I was away and I sat down last night and read it cover to cover.

I thought this was a strong introduction to the Anita Blake series and really enjoyed it. Its an entertaining and unchallanging read that held my attention all the way through and I can't wait untill I get the next one.

Sent airmail to gypsyrose02 by mistake.

Journal Entry 15 by CandyDarling from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Saturday, April 22, 2006
I received this book on Tuesday (April 18th) and started reading it right away, as I've wanted to read the Anita Blake series for years. I was surprised to find out that Guilty Pleasures was already published in 1993. Where have I been all these years? I probably would have finished the book in one sitting, if it weren't for pesky nuisances such as work and the like... Anyway, yesterday evening I had finally time to sit down and finish the book. :)

I enjoyed this book very much. It was interesting right from the beginning, and easy to read. I was glad to notice that even though the series has been compared to Buffy (Anita even calls herself a vampire slayer a couple of times) it was still different enough, so that I wasn't comparing the two series to each other while reading. At least after the first book, I have to say I still prefer Buffy. (Although, you can ask me about pretty much anything: "Do you prefer Buffy or x?" and the answer will always be "Buffy".) I'm pretty sure neither series has been influenced very much by the other: the creator of Buffy, Joss Whedon, says his main influence for Buffy was the character of Kitty Pryde from the X-Men comics, and even though the film Buffy the Vampire Slayer was released in 1992, I doubt Laurell K. Hamilton could have found any inspiration in it.

I had a few minor quibbles though. When Anita was first introduced, I thought "oh no, not another tough-chick heroine with intimacy issues" but thankfully I got over that as the book progressed. And I've understood Anita gets more comfortable with her own sexuality as the series progresses, something I'm very much looking forward to.

I was also offended by the following passage when I first read it (page 12): "It was a shame that it wasn't merely the shape of a cross that hurt a vampire. Unfortunately, the cross had to be blessed, and backed up by faith. An atheist waving a cross at a vampire was a truly pitiful sight." As I thought about the issue more, I came to the conclusion that I actually prefer this version of the vampire lore; this way, the power doesn't lie so much in the cross itself as in the person holding it. I have to admit I had a hard time accepting Anita's Christian faith at first too, but that was also something I got used to. Heck, I would probably believe in the Christian God too if I could see with my own eyes that a Christian cross hurts a vampire. (I have nothing against Christianity itself: I've read lots of books on it, and I read the Bible too, I only have issues with some of the beliefs of the church today. So as long as Anita doesn't start saying stuff like "Homosexuality is a sin, but fortunately you can be healed back into heterosexuality" I have nothing against her. ;) )

I'm very much looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series (and everything else Laurell K. Hamilton has written)! As AngelKitty said in her review, I too liked how there was all sorts of new legal issues after the undead had been granted equal rights by the Supreme Court. "Do heirs have to return their inheritance if the deceased becomes undead?" I hope we get to see more of this in future novels, and I'm especially interested in learning more about the Christian church's attitude towards vampires. I loved that this book had so many threads left open and questions left unanswered. I'm looking forward to learning more about Edward, Jean-Claude and the rest of the caracters. So Margih, hurry up and send me the next book! ;)

Thank you CheriePie for organising this and so many other great bookrings! I will send this book to jessicaloveyou in Singapore as soon as I get her address.
