In 1999 (or was it 2000?) I chose to take an elective in the Arts Faculty. I was undertaking Computer Science, and there were a number of electives that we were required to complete - and reading has always been a passion of mine. Shakespeare, too, is one of my loves, which made my choice of subject easy: I decided to do a 'Traditions of Shakespeare' course. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that it wasn't so much traditions of shakespeare as feminist traditions of interpretations of Shakespeare. While I learnt a lot during the subject, I can't honestly say that I really enjoyed it as much as I had hoped. Anyway - part of that course was to read (and write an essay) on Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres. It made an impact on me, but again I wouldn't say that I *enjoyed* the book... then again, that was hardly the point, was it?
I saw this book of hers in an ex-library sale and it took me back. So I bought it to release at the January meetup... not to mention in order to bore you with tales of my long-lost youth (coughcough!)

On the whole an enjoyable nook, Bit disappointed with the end but looks as if there should be Part 2
