The Berlin Stories: The Last of Mr. Norris and Goodbye to Berlin

Considering my love of *Cabaret,* I was delighted when I got the chance to read this for a Berlin literature class. I'm sad to say that I was extremely disappointed. It was very poorly written and had essentially no plot; it felt like Christopher Isherwood scribbled down whatever he could just to get published. The period (1920s Berlin) is infinitely fascinating, but this book does little to capture it. (I must admit, there were several staunch supporters of this book in my class, who disagree with all of the above and just generally loved it.) Despite all this, I do think it's an important book to read, because it is about Berlin, and it's so well-known that everyone should be able to form a personal opinion on it. Do tell me what you think.
