Typical Nick Hornby. Hysterical characters, great writing, a fun, quick read.

Katie Carr is a GP married to "The Angriest Man in Holloway" with two children. Now married to a distant, constantly sarcastic partner she doesn't know, she wants desperately to leave the marriage. Her plans go awry when, in a pique of curiosity, her husband gets his bad back cured by a faith healer named DJ GoodNews. He also has had his bad attitude cured as well. Katie and her children find it difficult to relate to the new David, especially when he starts a spate of good works aimed at making up for lost time that include giving away posessions, moving the faith healer into their home, and starting a campaign to move homeless teens into the neighbors' unused spare bedrooms.

The circumstances of her life make Katie question and closely examine herself in often painful detail. Perhaps that is the main reason this read is so very discomforting: we go through the apex of a life in crisis with the main character, in her head, no less.

If you're expecting HIGH FIDELITY, this is a very different reading experience. Certainly, Hornby's wit and style are present, but HOW TO BE GOOD is darker, more serious, and written from a feminine point of view. The novel has light touches, but no laugh out loud moments.
