Journal Entry 1 by Shelbycat from Llanelli, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, December 18, 2004
From the back cover:

"It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most infetile and climatically aggressive of all inhabited continents and still Australia teems with life - a large protion of it wuite deadly. In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else.
Ignoring such dangers - and yet curiously obsessed by them - Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent;the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. Life doesn't get much better then this..."

This is for a NSSFC, and will be sent today.

I received this as my NSSFC from Shelbycat - Thank You! And you're right, I don't know yet whether it will become part of my PC, but for the time being it will sit on Mt Toobie with the others, and obviously I'll decide once I've eventually read it ;o)

Once again - thank you Shelbycat ;o) ((christmas huggles))

Although I did enjoy what I read of this book I'm ashamed to say I didn't manage to read the whole thing. I didn't find it a book I could read from cover to cover as I normally would do but one I kept dipping into in between reading fiction.

As this is the first bookring I've been a part of I didn't want to hold onto it for too long but will probably try and get another copy in the future that I can keep and take more time over. Thanks for the book Spike : -) I will post it to Pookledo in the next few days.

Journal Entry 7 by Pookledo from Loughborough, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Saturday, October 1, 2005
Received in the post this morning and already seems to have two bookmarks in it. One marking where I am up to, and one marking where my husband has got to as well!

After just reading a biography book, I think this might be a welcome change.

Thanks Spike and marie-therese!

I found this book to be interesting more than entertaining although I have to admit to the odd "laugh out loud" moment.

There were so many occassions in the book where Brysons historical anecdotes gave background knowledge to a snippet of information that I had stored in the dusty cupbaord at the back of my brain. Amazing!

I've noticed that FiBe's bookshelf has a "on holiday" warning. I've sent a PM and am ready to send this on when I get an address back.

Journal Entry 9 by FiBe from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Monday, October 31, 2005
Hi I received this book earlier in the week (my apologies for forgetting to journal). However I have nearly finished it and will pm marie-therese for their address so that I can send it on its way this week.

Journal Entry 10 by FiBe from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Thursday, November 3, 2005
Ok book is now finished and like the other Bill Bryson books I have read I enjoyed it immensely (although my favourite is still Notes from a Small Island). As usual not necessarily a book to read in public as snorting with laughter at regular intervals may occur :D

Thanks for letting me read it Spike. I have The Lost Continent on my TBR pile maybe I'll get to it sooner now!

I have pm'd marie-therese for address.

Journal Entry 11 by FiBe from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Friday, November 4, 2005
marie-therese has asked to be skipped so I guess I post it back to Spike once I've got his address. I'll pm him now.

Current read (as of a few days ago so I'm a few chapters in, and loving it).

Another Bill Bryson book which I thoroughly enjoyed. As others have said, both his humour and his style of giving you a little bit of background on the places he visits is very enjoyable. I already wanted to visit Australia before reding this book, but now probably even moreso.

Preferably with Bill Bryson as a guide :O)

I actually finished this about a week ago and I've already passed it on to CaterinaAnna.

Journal Entry 16 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, December 27, 2008
I seem to be having an Australia month, although the two other Aussie books were set in Western Australia. This is classic Bryson: travel, observation, history and wry humour. I have vague memories of it getting poor reviews at the time, but maybe that was just from savvy journalists who link profundity and reams of recondite information in erudite language with worthiness. Well, worthy does not always equal entertaining and the latter is what I would rather have more often than not. Thank you Messers Bryson & Spike.

This is staying chez the latter for now as he intends to send it out on a ring.
