Watership Down: A Novel

A wonderful book. I had heard about this book before, but never read it until now. Better than Tailchaser's Song or Redwall.
The epic novel of a group of adventurous rabbits who leave their doomed warren in search of a new life. The rabbits in the book have their own language and culture, and say a lot about humanity. There's a warren that has sacrificed freedom for security to such an extent that they now live lives not worth living in perfect safety, and other strange events along the journey, some wonderful, some horrifying.
I loved the whole book, but I especially liked the tales of El-ahrairah, the rabbit folk hero, a trickster prince with a thousand enemies.

Given to a new anime club member after a discussion over Playboy's alleged copyright on the very concept of anthropomorphic rabbits (a discussion that started from AMVs with a Gainax bunnygirl), when I pulled out the freshly-registered copy and he mentioned he had never read it.
