What a Great Book!
The story is about two people, written in concurrent chapters. One is a Japanese soldier who is an occupying force in China (the story takes place around the late 1930s). The other is a young Manchurian girl (later teens) who is a skilled go player.
The chapters follow their how their lives are pulled together in sparse, revealing, and lyrical prose.
Amazing and I won't say more. Rarely do I savor a book so!

Almost two years later now and I am giving this wonderful book to a dear friend who is in fact from the States so it will probably travel back with him to Washington DC. Let's see if he joins BC...?
And greedyreader: thanks again, you are the gem here.
