A touching book, my favorite of Bowen's, that is at once a coming of age novel, an account of the end of a historical era and class, and a wryly observed comedy of manners. The author's personality, writing through, but distinct from, the central character, is what I remember most about this, and lifts The Last September above the ordinary.
