The Back of the Book

'Not since Graham Greene or William Golding has a novelist captured so forcefully the relationship between school bully and victim ... Atwood's power games are played, exquisitely, by little girls' Listener

Elaine Risley, a painter, returns to Toronto to find herself overwhelmed by her past. Memories of childhood - unbearable betrayals and cruelties - surface relentlessly, forcing her to confront the spectre of Cordelia, once her best friend and tormentor, who has haunted her for forty years ...

'Irresistible ... This book is about life for all of us. She is one of our finest novelists. Read it.' The Times

I did enjoy this book but I have to admit I prefer Atwood's sci-fi/fantasy based books. Again, her style of cutting from the past to present is becoming familar but not in a dull way.

In the space of a few days Elaine Risley's life is revealed to us, espcially her memories of her childhood friend (or foe?) Coredelia. We reflect on her life with her and on her work as an artist.
