On The Road, the most famous of Jack Kerouac's works, is not only the soul of the Beat movement and literature, but one of the most important novels of the century. Like nearly all of Kerouac's writing, On The Road is thinly fictionalized autobiography, filled with a cast made of Kerouac's real life friends, lovers, and fellow travelers. Narrated by Sal Paradise, one of Kerouac's alter-egos, On the Road is a cross-country bohemian odyssey that not only influenced writing in the years since its 1957 publication but penetrated into the deepest levels of American thought and culture.

This book arrived Sherwood Brisbane Queensland Australia Wednesday 06 April 2005 from far, far away Austria, forwarded by DiamondLucy. I will re-read this book from my youth, first read in 1958 (*sigh*). Thank you DiamondLucy, this is a lovely gesture of friendship.

I saw this one come through on the Release Notes last night, and had to quickly find out where The Blue Pineapple is and go there on my way to work this morning, to grab the book. I've never read it, but have always meant to. Recently my 15yo daughter asked if we had it, because they mentioned in on "The OC" and she wants to read it! Thank heavens for teen TV shows, hey? :-).

It's Anzac Day on Monday, so this book will come to Rainbow Beach with us for the long weekend.

[edited later]On the Road came with us to Rainbow Beach. Here's a picture of my daughter engrossed in it, while everyone else is swimming in Lake Mackenzie on Fraser Island - white sand, fresh water, sunny day. By the way, she usually has more hair than that, but recently shaved her head to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

It's really lovely to have discovered this project! I've had this book in my 'to read' pile for a while, finally felt ready to make a start on it this evening, and found the Book Crossing sticker inside; I've borrowed it from my partner Steph (the girl pictured in the previous comment written by her mum (: ) I'm so enamoured by the history of physical second-hand books, and this certainly seems the most appropriate book to take an extensive trip around the world!
