Book taken from the Book Exchange, 8th Floor, Sydney Central YHA, during Australian BookCrossing Convention Sydney, 12-14 November 2004, to read and re-release.

From back cover:
"Solaris is the masterpiece of Polish author Stanislaw Lem, a psychological drama set in space which is both a gripping page-turner and a profound exploration of the potential of the science fiction genre.

First filmed in 1972 by the legendary Russion Director Andrei Tarkovsky, it has now been re-imagined for the screen by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh. George Clooney takes the lead role of Kelvin, a psychologist who arrives at a research space station called Prometheus, orbiting the mysterious ocean planet of Solaris. Kelvin's mission is to ascertain whether research into Solaris should be terminated for want of progress. But he finds Prometheus all but deserted, its straggling crew seemingly haunted by hallucinations of figures from their respective pasts. Kelvin is forced to confront this phenomenon for himself when he is visited in the middle of the night by a woman who is outwardly identical to his dead wife. He is torn between the urge to resist the disturbing ambience of Solaris, and the emotional pull toward this living, breathing likeness of the woman he loved."

Wow, thanks Jenny-G for this wish come true :) Thank you also for the labels and most of all for the BookCrossing fridge magnet - I'm mad about those! Will try to read and re-release as soon as possible, most probably in 2012 as I now have a few other books on the line.

It took me exactly a year to start reading this one, as Mt. TBR isn't exactly the nicest stack around, but I'm glad I did. The book is once again available for 1001-library members, as advertised on my profile.

Left with mixed feelings after reading this. Talk about the Ocean being a harsh mistress! I found the main lines of the novels impressive, especially from their thought-provoking point of view. But I felt everything was somehow left unfinished, and the theories that are brought forward during the last chapters didn't quite fit the big picture for me.
