I started reading this book with images from the film firmly in my mind. In some ways this was a handicap but in others it really helped me picture Newfoundland, although the descriptions of the area would have done that well enough on its own. I found it difficult to engage with some of the characters in this book, and therefore didn't really care if Quoyle found love. Some of the occurances in the book really beggared belief such as the resurrection of Jack. All in all I am glad that i read it but I doubt if I will ever read another by this author.
