I was really caught up in this story. I tried to read it in one sitting, staying up until 2 A.M., but had to put it down to pick up again in the morning and finish. I was sympathetic to the main character Ninah and to a lesser degree James.
This story is about a young girl being raised in a small religious community tightly controlled by her preacher grandfather who makes up his own brand of Hellfire and Brimstone religion loosely quoting from the bible and his own made up guide book every Sunday and on numerous other occasions when he has everyone at church. I have read several books written or narrated by Muslim woman and this book set in the US about a young American girl reminds me that you don't have to go outside our own country to find people using religion as a reason to control and hurt others. I know the book is fiction, but some of the stuff (not using doctors or medicine, making people feel guilty for overwhelming but natural feelings, suppressing and controlling woman, ect) is real and it infuriated me several times to read about Ninah's plight and associate it with real people.
This was a great story that stirred up powerful thoughts and emotions for me.
I am passing it on to Lei510 who sent me postage for it. I hope she gets as caught up in the tale as I did.
