Since Summer was six years old she lived with dear Aunt May and Uncle Ob. Now, six years later, Aunt May has died. Summer, who misses May with all her might, is afraid something will happen to Ob. Most days Ob seems like he doesn't want to go on.

Newbery medal winner.

A touching, humorous story about grief, loss, and love. It won the Newbery Medal in 1993. I enjoyed it immensely. Here are two passages I particularly liked:

p. 15 May was the best person I ever knew. Even better than Ob. She was a big barrel of nothing but love, and while Ob and me were off in our dreamy heads, May was here in this trailer seeing to it there was a good home for us when we were ready to land. She understood people and she let them be whatever way they needed to be. She had faith in every single person she ever met, and this never failed her, for nobody ever disappointed May. Seems people knew she saw the very best of them, and they'd turn that side to her to give her a better look.

p. 23 She'd just remind us that there's more places to be together than this one. She'd tell us we don't have to give up if this life doesn't give us everything we want. There's always another one.

Thanks, LGinder, for sharing this heartwarming book with me!

Wow! Two Newbery Award Winners arriving in the same package! (The other was Dicey's Song. Check that out on my bookshelf too.)

I will probably save this to read to my husband as we are traveling to visit family. Listening helps him to keep awake. (Hmmm, reading the other entries makes me think he might not be able to see the road for crying. I'll have to rethink that.)

Thank you for your help in my travels through the Newbery's.

Well, I didn't have to save it too long. Made a trip and this was good reading material. (Only 4 pages left when we arrived-only because we had to take a detour when the Parkway was closed. Had to pay attention to the map rather than the book!)

The both of us really enjoyed this. There were tears but good tears. We loved the affection the three main characters had for each other and May. Even though Cletus was "weird" when he entered the scene, it was good to see his weirdness accepted and appreciated. Summer and Ob were missing May and he (Cletus) was instramental in their "going on".

A good sensitive treatment of death and moving on that children (as well as adults) need to be aware of.
