Our Kate: An Autobiography
2 journalers for this copy...
Our Kate is a story of a person and period. It is an honest statement about living with hardship and poverty seen through the eyes of a highly sensitive child and woman whose zest for life, liking people, and unquenchable sense of humor won through to make Catherine Cookson the warm, engaging and human writer she was.

I read a number of Catherine Cookson's novels growing up, and while they followed a reasonably standard formula (fallen woman, illegitimate child, Jarrow/Shields locale), there was an honesty and humanity to her stories that I always enjoyed. Imagine my surprise when I read this autobiography to discover that she herself was an illegitimate child. Although the writing is sometimes unpolished and even a bit awkward in the memoir, Mrs. Cookson shows what education and drive can do for the most desperate individual. Quite readable and very moving.
