A successful experiment in form. Is it an epic poem followed by a scholarly commentary? Or is it a murder mystery? A comedy? A tale of political intrigue? All these things? You decide. I rate it one of the best books ever written in the English language. (Yes, the author has a Russian name, but in the latter half of his career, he wrote all his novels in English). Nabokov's most famous novel is Lolita, but this is right up there with it.
