I started this on 16 October and it is very engrossing. The characters are well drawn, detailed and realistic - well, so far. I'm not all that sure about Karim but that's a minor gripe.

It's hard to believe it's a first novel, it's just so well structured and paced. I'm going to really miss the characters when I've finished the book

Journal Entry 3 by beeofgoodcheer from Stowmarket, Suffolk United Kingdom on Saturday, October 23, 2004
I loved this book, the characters were well drawn and believable, their development realistic and the situations not overly dramatic.

I really liked the people and cared about what happened to them.

I'm so pleased that this book lived up to it's hype!

I really liked this book. It was well written and flowed beautifully. It was unashamedly the story of Nazneen, there are other characters and their stories unfold with each turning of the page, but they never overwhelm or overshadow the central character.

Well worth reading :-)

That was incredibly fast! It arrived today, thank you.

I'm sorry not to have journalled this earlier. I could have sworn I had!

It was a superb account of Nazneen's life as an immigrant in London. It was both moving and humorous, and one that I will remember.

It now continues its journey and goes to Intrycksflikka in Finland as part of a relay

A big thank you to nyassa for sending me the book and the lovely postcard! Will put the book on my TBR. Seems to be a very interesting read =)

Journal Entry 10 by intry from Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Tuesday, January 3, 2006
I have finally read the book. I had some trouble with it though. Didn't really enjoy it in the beginning, but I'm glad I didn't give up, cause I liked the end. The last 100 pages just flew by me with fast speed and left a trace in me, making it difficult to pick up the next book to read.

The Observer says of Brick Lane, "This highly evolved, accomplished book is a reminder of how exhilarating novels can be: it opened up a world whose contours I could recognise, but which I needed Monica Ali to make me understand." Brick Lane was a short list nominee for the 2003 Man Booker Prize.

Now off to SpikesMom in the US

Wow, what a history this book has had!

It arrived here in the States today and is off to Mt. TBR for a bit. To be honest, this is a book I wasn't sure I wanted to read, but a quick glance up and down the journal entries makes me glad it's here. Hope I get to it soon.

I've heard such good things about this book, I was shocked when I realized it bored me to tears. Then I realized it had been shortlisted for the Man Booker and ... yeah. I have yet to read a book that's made that list -- long, short, or winner -- and liked it.

I sense a trend.
