This is the third in Phillips' wonderful series of novels about middle-aged gay lawyer Geoffry Chadwick. In this book he finds himself drafted to help plan the wedding of his niece, which he wouldn't mind quite so much if it weren't that the groom's mother seems to be set on capturing him and is oblivious to his total lack of interest. And could the groom's best friend be flirting with him too? Oh, and then there are the anonymous threats... As with the previous Chadwick books, this one wanders between comedy-of-manners and suspense novel, and one is never quite sure whether a scene will end with laughter, tears, or bloodshed. I find myself liking Chadwick more every time I meet him - perhaps because he's one of the few literary heroes I know of who's about my age - and equally bookish and solitary... I only wish I could carry off social occasions with his panache!
