I am a huge Michener fan, so hope to get to this book.
From summary on the back cover the book centers around an American stationed in Japan during the 50s, who was dead against American soldiers marrying Japanese women, until he met Hana-ogi !! It is reviewed as "a moving story, told in spare, strong prose"
Will save this one for a themed release at a Japanese restaurant.

This book was scooped up by my mother. May never surface again :)
Yeah! What a treat to have a package of books waiting for me at work. Thanks! Michener is one of my husband's favourites so he's really excited about this book.
The only reason this got a 4 is because my husband was able to finish it. Had it been much worse, he would have given up before the end and it would have gotten a 1.
It's a plodding, awkwardly constructed, racially insensitive "love" story. The characters are inconsistent, the dialogue is laughable, and the description of the people of Japan is insensitive at best. It was published in the 50s and he supposes this has something to do with it. This book would never have been published had it been written in the last ten years.
He's glad that Michener mainly stuck to historical epics after this book. That is his strength. If you were a rabid Michener fan, then you might read it or if you were interested in american portrayals of non-american cultures from the 50s then it might be an interesting read (more to see how american writers viewed non-american cultures at that time, not to see how the cultures really were). Apart from those two cases, my husband feels this book has little merit.

Heading overseas to another BCer who responded to my "The Books Must Go!" RABCK.
I've got the RABCK books today. After seeing the journal entries I have to read it. I am no Michener fan but sometimes I enjoy to read stuff with with very bad reviews.
I am sorry, that it took me so long. Some books got lost, when I moved nearly 10 years ago and they just resurfaced.
I just glanced through the book and after reading a mere 5 pages here and there decided against reading it completely. I won't enjoy it.
As it is not my book, I will set this book free as soon as I get a chance.
