All the Pretty Horses (The Border Trilogy, Vol 1)

Although I likely won't read this book again, at least I can say that I've done it once. More a coming of age story than a romance, the book follows John Grady as he leaves his unhappy home on a Texas ranch to train work horses in Mexico. John is the strong silent type, who is easy to like due to his unwillingness to judge people outwardly. Although John is not a charismatic leading man, I was determined to finish the book to see what author Cormac MacCarthy had in store for him. This is definately not just a "chick book". I certainly expected more young love, but was pleasantly surprised to find that the story had some unexpected twists and turns. Why did I rate this book only a five then? Mainly the dialogue... This book is a "western" in my opinion, the banter between characters is brief and to the point, with a lack of punctuation to help the reader along. The rest I leave up to the next reader... Enjoy!

RELEASE NOTES:
I first read this book about ten years ago and I remember thinking it was quite wonderful then. The second time around I was less struck with it, but I find the evocation of the landscape enjoyable. I also enjoyed the twists and turns.
Mostly, I'm thrilled I found a Bookcrossing book!
