I've always intended to read this book, but never got around to it. Now I've seen the film, and am not in any hurry to start the novel. I think I'll release it, and if I am ever in the right frame of mind to read it, I'll just get myself another copy. (Enjoyed the film.)

I just have to butt in and say that this is one of my favorite books. I am sending my other copy on to Moem in the Netherlands. When I can get the link to work, I'll post it here, but for right now, it keeps taking me back to this copy's journal entry, no matter how I beg and plead.

I really liked this book. It is not a rapidly moving story, so if you like a fast pace, slow yourself down!

One of the things I really loved was the references to Bartrum's wonderful book on the flora and fauna of the region. This is one of my favorite areas of the country, and the story even pushes into Charleston a little.

Here is a link to a web cam and site in the area of the actual Cold Mountain. Shining Rock Wildreness

FROM THE PUBLISHER
Based on local history and family stories passed down by the author's great-great-grandfather, Cold Mountain is the tale of a wounded soldier Inman, who walks away from the ravages of the war and back home to his prewar sweetheart, Ada. Inman's odyssey through the devastated landscape of the soon-to-be-defeated South interweaves with Ada's struggle to revive her father's farm, with the help of an intrepid young drifter named Ruby. As their long-separated lives begin to converge at the close of the war, Inman and Ada confront the vastly transformed world they've been delivered.

Charles Frazier reveals marked insight into man's relationship to the land and the dangers of solitude. He also shares with the great nineteenth-century novelists a keen observation of a society undergoing change. Cold Mountain recreates a world gone by that speaks eloquently to our time.

Sending this book to someone in Jolly Old England, as a bit of a surprise, along with some others.

An Operation Netstation book that, shamefully, I'm only just getting round to journalling. Sorry folks but work has been a bit mad lately and I've only now had time to open another box! Thanks again for all the time you took with the sneaky m-bag ;o)
