Purchased at library book sale ... will hopefully read someday. May send out on a bookring first.
I didn't particularly like this book overall. I found myself anticipating some sort of feel good story at the beginning, and instead got a story of what I feel was dishonestly and betrayal.
SPOILERS -- if you want to read, highlight the lines.
I thought that Annie and Robert would rekindle their love for one another - the trip out west to heal Pilgrim & Grace would help them to rediscover their love for one another. And I purposely could not come to accept that Tom and Annie would come to be lovers, despite all of the (very obvious) foreshadowing. And the ending (in summary) -- Annie: "I'll leave Robert. I can't live without you." Tom "No Annie. It is I who can't live without you." So Grace takes off to kill herself (blech!), and Tom ultimately allows himself to be killed (basically committing suicide) by breaking up a fight between Pilgrim and a wild mustang. Thereby scarring Grace to remember that her whole life -- after he worked so hard to help her 'recover' from her accident. It's just so god-awful. And then, Annie has Tom's baby (after years on trying with Robert) -- trying to convince us that it was ok that she cheated on her marriage or something. Poor Robert - he was nothing but loving and supportive of this selfish bitch of a woman, and that's what he gets. Some cowboy (who never does actually any 'whispering' that I could see) sweeps in, plants his seed, and then dies, thereby scarring Grace for life (what trust will she have in relationships as an adult), alienating Robert, and making a fool of Annie. I actually had bad dreams resulting from reading this ... Overall, all I can say is blech!!
I will release this book over the upcoming week or so. Hopefully whomever finds it finds more joy in the story than I did.
