Typhoid Mary : An Urban Historical
6 journalers for this copy...
A short but fascinating examination of the circumstances surrounding the cook Mary Mallon dubbed "Typhoid Mary" in turn of the century New York.
Bourdain writes in an engaging style and uses his perspective as a chef to good effect when supposing Mary's motives and describing her environment.
Enjoy!

A really interesting and quick read. Bourdain writes entertainingly, and obviously empathises with Mary as a fellow cook - he doesn't condone her behaviour (going back to work as a cook even though she knew she was infected), but he understands her motivations, and conveys them well.

Caught this book at the meetup on Tuesday Jan 11th.
Read this book and was interested in the period described re the discovery of how diseases spread and typhoid in particular. Did not really enjoy the long discussions about cooking and cooks but appreciate these help provide an insight to Mary's perspective.
