While not a perfect book, this tale kept me pretty thoroughly involved in the intertwined lives and fortunes of Amelia Sedley and Rebecca Sharp, both graduates of Miss Pinkerton's Academy, a posh finishing school for young ladies. While Thackeray purports that his heroine is the blushing and admirable, Miss Sedley, it's soon apparent that the star of this particular tale is the indomitable Miss Sharp, and not for her maidenly virtues as much her apparent manipulation of those around he in order to attain the style of life to which she is certain she is entitled to. Thackeray goes a bit overboard with the interjections to the reader about particular plot points, inserting this meter of social virtue in the tale and I found that a bit distracting but, overall, the story was truly enjoyable and I'm glad I finally took the time to get acquainted with the young Misses Sedley and Sharp.
