Reserved for a bookring.

From the back of the book:
*Are you certain you’re ten pounds overweight?

*Are you perpetually on a diet?

*Do you believe you can’t be fit, healthy or beautiful unless you’re thin?

*Do you exercise til it hurts?

*Do you refer to eating a piece of chocolate as “being bad”?

MAYBE YOU’VE BEEN SOLD A BILL OF GOODS.

Like many professional women, social historian and popular culture analyst Roberta Pollack Seid, Ph.D., was herself caught up in the quest for the “perfect” body. In Never Too Thin, she argues that the American woman’s obsessive discontent with her body is a kind of socially sanctioned self-abuse fostered by a complex network of influences- from the political, fashion and medical establishments to the rise of feminism, insurance-company demographics, and changes in the food industry. Only by recognizing its roots can we rid ourselves of weight obsession and regain control of our lives and health. This intelligent, compelling book is the perfect place to start.

RELEASE NOTES:

Mailed on to the next person on the list.

Unfortunately I didn't read this. I started to, but I just wasn't in the right mindset to read a book like that at this time. I waited to mail it because of lack of cash.

But, it's now on it's way! Thanks, nyla7, for including me in this ring! It was fun, even if I didn't actually read the book. :)

What a thought provoking book. The evolution of our weight obsession is so interesting. I understand my Mother and Grandmother a bit better now! Really wish that this obsession didn't have to be passed on to my daughters, unfortunatley, the legacy continues. It would be interesting to add on a couple more chapters, to see what the author's take on how the extrememe makeovers that are so popular now fit into this. I wish I could get every woman at the fitness club where I work to read this one.

Sending on to Wirigerie in South Australia. Sorry for the delay. Happy New Year! :)

Arrived today.

I'm eager to get into this one. I'm on a course to enhance my ability to get a job... unfortunately there are not enough computers for everyone so I'll be taking this along to help allivate the boredom!

Journal Entry 9 by Wirigerie from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Monday, May 30, 2005
Firstly, sorry I've had this book so long. My dad got ill and then died in early May and everything else in my life has been on the back burner.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a well thought out argument and tracks the start of the "Thin is beautiful" line of thought.

I too am sorry that more people don't realise that perpetually thinner is not healthy. I wonder if we've truely swung back to a more conservative idea of "healthy weight" or if we still have a way to go.

I didn't realise the roots of this current fashion trend began at the begining of last century. I wonder what we'll be saying about health and weight in another 10 - 20 years. It would be interesting to see an update of this book then.

Thanks for the opportunity to participate.

On to Kiwiwonder when I get the details.

Arrived late last week and it completely escaped me to journal it -- but am now. Have been eagerly awaiting this one but alas, have several in front of it, so will get to it as quit as I can.

Many apologies for keeping this book so long -- no real excuse other than life getting in the way.

The book was more history that I expected, but it still provided a lot of insight into how society's ideas about weight came to be. On the one hand, I admit that I still buy into society's ideas, at least from a health stand point -- but on the other hand, it backs up my opinions that I can be larger than is considered "ideal" now, and still be perfectly healthy, happy, and acceptable, at least to myself.

Sending on to Tammychi via airmail.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the book. I just wanted to recommend one I'm reading now that is along the same lines- "Losing It: America's Obsession With Weight and the Industry that Feeds on It" by Laura Fraser. Unfortunately it's a library book so I can't ring it, but thought I'd pass the info along anyway. It's slightly different in focus- concentrates more on the diet industry and exposes a lot of scams for what they are. Also quite a bit of discussion about studies about obesity and how it's actually just as harmful to be underwieght as it is to be very overwieght. More "food" for thought.

Never Too Thin has arrived in Hawai'i. Life is a little crazy and hectic at this moment, but I will try my hardest to read it in a timely manner.

I don't see myself finishing this book any time soon, so I've contacted Eucalia for her mailing addy.

Never Too Thin has left Hawaii and is on its way to Eucalia via Media Mail.

Starting it now. Thanks!

I had a hard time staying interested, which surprised me because the subject matter is fascinating. Overall, I found it a bit repetitive and dry. The historical information really needed to be supported with illustrations and photographs. Oddly enough, I came away from this read depressed and angry, but determined to start a new diet. Go figure. I have no idea what it was about this book that made me want to diet.

Contacting JenDudley for the next address on the ring.

Hope it's okay to insert a comment on the book here... (though I've already passed it on)...

I'm trying again to read this book (via Library copy), because I've become interested in the whole issue in a big way... I've discovered "non-dieting", so now I want to read up on why the opposite (dieting) has failed (95% of diets do). Intuitive Eating information

Just unpacked from a move, and was embarassed to find a bookring book sitting on the shelf. Eek! (Definitely more than the month I was supposed to take.)

I am speed-reading this book now. Mollygrue's profile says to skip her for all bookrings/rays, and Beachlover2003 has asked to be skipped. Wildflower67 did not respond to PMs. I'm attempting to return this book to nyla7, but she has PMing turned off.

Journal Entry 19 by AngelKitty from Denver, Colorado USA on Saturday, November 29, 2008
*Paging Nyla7*

Apologies to those that are done with the book. Everyone after me has asked to be skipped, and nyla7 (the owner of this book) has PMing turned off. I am adding a journal entry in the hopes that nyla7 still gets journal entries by email. Nyla7, if you receive this message, please PM me with a mailing address by May 2009. I will be moving then, and if I have not received a message back, I will pass this on to another reader.
