Book four of the Tales of the City series. I loved this whole series and tore through each book, all were quick and enjoyable read.

From the book jacket:
The tenants of 28 Barbary Lane have fled their cozy nest for adventures far afield. Mary Ann Singleton finds love at sea with a forgetful stranger, Mona Ramsey discovers her doppelganger in a desert whorehouse, and Michael Tolliver bumps into a certain gynecologist in a seedy Mexican bar. Meanwhile, their venerable landlady takes the biggest journey of all -- without every leaving home.

The book arrived safely in today's mail, along with the lovely Brooklyn Bridge postcard. I enjoyed the first set of "Tales," and am looking forward to this one. Many thanks!

Kind of like visiting old friends and thumbing through the photo albums, isn't it? {grin} Lots of fun, with occasional creepy bits and some blessedly brief suspense.

I won't give away any of the plot twists (though most Maupin fans know them already) - but here's a very funny limerick by none other than W. H. Auden that Maupin uses as an introduction:
As the poets have mournfully sung,
Death takes the innocent young,
The rolling in money,
The screamingly funny,
And those who are very well hung.
-- W. H. Auden
I bet our high school literature classes would have been a little livelier if they'd included quotes like that!
