The novella that gives this collection its name, "The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag", is the scariest story I've read, though it's not a conventional "scary story" or a conventional Heinlein story. Think equal parts Lovecraft and hardboiled detective novel... One of my favorite Heinlein short stories, "'And He Built A Crooked Hoise'", is also included.
