This is my 100th book registered. I wanted to pick a special one for that place, and this one seemed perfect (right before Banned Book Week too)!

This copy will be sent on a book ring and later wild released. I am registering another copy for my PC.

From Library Journal
"Scheduled for publication during Banned Books Week (September 25, 1999-October 2, 1999), this reference gives extensive insight into titles that historically have faced a high rate of censorship, both in the United States and abroad. The text is arranged in four sections, with titles divided by the main grounds--political, religious, sexual, and social--for censorship. Introductory notes for each section define what the book's authors mean by that type of suppression and summarize its history. Each title is identified by author, date and place of original publication, publisher, and literary form, and each entry includes a comprehensive summary of the text. These summaries are followed by a full censorship history and suggested "Further Readings" sections directing readers to accessible sources of additional information. By limiting the texts under consideration to 100, the authors are able to provide highly detailed accounts of each title's censorship history in what is surely the most exhaustive single-volume reference available. A valuable tool for those seeking information on particular banned books or on censorship in general; recommended for public and academic libraries. [This book is an adaptation of Facts on File's four-volume "Banned Books," LJ 6/1/98.--Ed.]--Karen E. Sadowski, Simmons Coll., Norwood, MA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information."

Sept 27

Just received in the mail this afternoon!

My mother and I sat down with this and went over the books in it that she has read, and the ones I have read. She has read on average 1 out of every four books discussed in this book.

I, however, didn't have many of these as assigned reading in school, and these are the ones I have read:

The Rights of Man
The Bible (Yes, I've read all of it)
The New Testament (Its in here as well as the Bible)
Forever
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Annie on my Mind

Amazing that my mother had read so many more of these than I have. (I have a college degree, and she doesn't, but obviously a degree doesn't mean you are more well read!)

I'm looking forward to reading this book and I like the fact it gives an overview of each book so I know which ones interest me enough so I can enlarge my list of read banned books! (I realize this is only 100 of books that have been banned but its a nice overview.)

October6:

Just finished this. I'll be mailing it on the 7th.

I already started writing down books I want to read as soon as I got this. Can't wait to get to the end and start finding these books.

I enjoyed this book. I put it on my wish list on amazon now because it would be a great reference for those times when I want to read something different but not sure what. PM'ed vicar-of-dibley so I can send this book on it's way.

Arrived as part of a book ring will be next to be read when I get back from Canada in a couple of weeks then it'll be off to Aussie land.

Came home from Canada with a nasty chest infection and devoured this book while in bed. Very interesting yet scary.
I can't believe there is so much banning going on in schools by "concerned" people of classics such as 1984, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mocking Bird and others all books which I studied for exams while in High School where not a mutter was heard from parents.
If a local minister did complain to a school about a book it wouldn't be taken off the shelves they'd be told to awa n' biel their heeds.
Anyway it's ready to go off to the other side of the world and wave to my family there as it passes

Turned up in the mail a few days ago (thanks vicar-of-dibley!) but I've only just gotten around to making a journal entry, sorry!

Looks like a bit of a weighty tome (as befits its subject matter, I guess!) so I will just be dipping in and out of this before passing it on to LeafOfHumanTree.

Journal Entry 10 by LeafOfHumanTree from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, January 6, 2005
Leaf received this on Christmas Eve, thank you. She'll post this book to the next person as soon as she's well enough to get to a post office. Leaf hasn't been able to read for more than a few minutes at a time, so she says she may not be able to review this book. She wants everyone to know she will forward the book on soon.

Received in the mail today. It's a couple down on the pile, but I'll get to this as soon as I can. I must say that it does look interesting from the quick browse that I had.

I won't rate this book as I did not really read it. I've ordered it from abebooks because I would like to spend more time over it, and also to have it here as a reference book. This will be heading off to newk within the week.

Edit January 25th, 2005: Posted to newk today in a pre-paid satchel.

Thanks to tantan and all of you. Especially to calicollie for organising.
You know you are in bookcrossing trouble when you have several half read books lying around. This has been one of them for the last few weeks.
Rather than read it through I have dipped in and out reading about particular banned books.
It is fascinating testament to the stupidity of banning books...although I am sure that *most* of those who do so are really trying to do good. I have read about 15 of the books here. And i doubt that I have been offended or corrupted! Although some would disagree I am sure.

Thanks again for the reminder tantan
