I have a 1961 edition of this book, discovered very serendipitiously the other week. I've been fascinated by the story of Ishi since learning of his existence just recently. I'm really looking forward to reading this old paperback book with its wonderful illustrations. It is still in very good shape.
From the back cover:
"The warmth and understanding with which Ishi's story is told give this book its special quality. It can, I think, without exaggeration, be called one of the great American stories, a contribution not only to our history but to our literature."
Lewis Gannett, in the Forward

This is a beautiful book, very lovingly told. It is at once painful and wondrous to read. I want to thank this poor lost man for giving of himself to let us know of his people.

Curiously, some older titles won't do through the releasing motions. I'm sending this one as a surprise RABCK to someone. She seems to be reading a book or two in this vein. It goes out to Shawano, Wisconsin today.

What a surprise to receive this book unexpectedly! :-D I'm thrilled to have it. I think I may have read it years ago (like maybe 25 years ago) but if that's the case, it's due for a re-read! Thanks!
