David Reimer suffered a botched circumcision at the age of 8 months which caused him to lose his penis. His parents were at a loss of what to do - they knew that their son could never be 'normal' and would suffer harrassment at school (using the urinals, etc). They were convinced by Dr John Money, a leading sex researcher of the time, to castrate their son and raise him as a girl. So David was given the name of Brenda and raised as a sister to his twin brother. The case was recorded in medical journals and television interviews as a complete success, however that did not reflect reality because David, although he did not know the truth, had no interest in 'girly' things and always felt that he wasn't a girl.
