The story of Ingrid, a brillaint poet imprisoned for murder, and her daughter, Astrid, whose odyssey through a series of Los Angeles foster homes --- each its own universe, with its own laws, its own dangers, its own hard lessons to be learned --- becomes a redeeming and surprising journey of self-discovery.

Bookray Rules

1. Reading has to be relaxing, I find. So I'm not going to set a rule that you have to finish the book within one month or within three weeks. But, of course it's not preferable that the book will stall somewhere. Please keep in mind others are waiting to read the book so keeping it for two months is not appropriate either. If you don’t think you will be able to read the book in a timely manner, please let me know. I can move you further down the list, if necessary.

2. When the book arrives, please let us know that you received it, by making a journal entry.

3. Start reading :-) When you're more than halfway through the book, PM the next person for their address.

4. When you've finished the book, make another journal entry with your thoughts.

5. Release the book to the next person on the list.

6. The last person on the list may release the book in the manner of their choosing!

7. Have Fun & Happy Reading!

Thanks to sharalsbooks for generously starting this ray. I would probably not have gotten a chance to read this otherwise. I finished it in a couple days, though it is a pretty long book. I'll send this along to agschoolgrad as soon as I get an address.

Journal Entry 8 by surfenkitten from Audubon, New Jersey USA on Tuesday, December 7, 2004
just got it today, and scanned the first few pages just to kind of see what it was about. am now up to chapter 7...the author's writing is mesmerizing. will update when finished....

update 12/21

fascinating. the story itself isn't what i normally would choose to read, but Astrid was a really intriguing character. i loved the way the author described the situation but, for the most part, kept Astrid's personal emotions and feelings separate, almost. gave the story an out-of-body feeling. also liked how Astrid changed with her surroundings, but leaves her physical appearance as almost an afterthought, until the end....

thanks sharalsbooks for sharing! MazieNH asked to be skipped, so it's on its way to Aisling78 soon.....

Journal Entry 9 by Aisling78 from Essex, Massachusetts USA on Monday, January 31, 2005

Message from Aisling78:

I have long since sent this book to the next bookcrosser in line, q-cow.
She lives in the Philippines, if I remember right, but had an address in
the United States. It might be taking a while to reach her there, since
she is overseas. I'm sorry I never did a second journal entry after
reading this book, I always do, but was going through a good amount of
computer trouble at that time and was having difficulting even logging on
to my internet service, let alone get onto bookcrossing. I can't remember
when exactly I mailed that book, but I believe it was well before summer.

To be Read as we speak

Journal Entry 12 by q-cow on Tuesday, September 27, 2005
Best. Book. Ever.
This book makes me want to go out and buy copies for my favorite friends. I'm going to buy a copy for Sei especially. Because when I read this I though of her.

Oh god this book was amazing. Every character was interesting. But Ingrid was a total b*tch. And poor Claire. This book should totally be studied in English classes.

I liked how Astrid learned things from each foster home. I hate to see this book go. But will be sent to infantrywife.
