Ice Hunt

"Buried deep in the earth's polar ice cap - carved into a moving island of ice twice the size of the United States - is the site of a remarkable experiment that blurred the line between life and death. Abandoned for more than seventy years, Ice Station Grendel - the twisted brainchild of the finest minds of the former Soviet Union - was designed to be inaccessible and virtually invisible.
But an American undersea research vessel, the Polar Sentinel, has inadvertently pulled too close. And a crew member has seen something alive inside, something whose survival defies every natureal law....."

This book is shockingly mediocre. I wouldn't even rate it next to Cussler. Consider it Cussler-lite. At least Clive injects some spirit and humor (as absurd as it is) into his works, something Ice Hunt is sorely lacking. I thought I was reading an early treatment for a film screenplay. There are way too many characters, all are so bland and indistinguishable that Rollins has to lay out their positions with a little index in the front of the book. The Plot:
Within a polar ice cap lies a secret. The Russians are so worried that the secret will get out that they are willing to kill to keep it quiet. The US Navy Seals are called in to wage war and a nuclear sub is brought in for backup. Throw in a few Alaska residents who inadvertently stumble into the mess, their dog, some very unrealistic happenings, and a few prehistoric monsters. At stake, the possibility of a nuclear blast annihilating the polar ice cap affecting weather patterns all over the world and life as we know it.
What a mess! ICE HUNT is full of interminable chases- the Russians chase the American military and the Alaskan residents. The US military chasing the Russians, the prehistoric monsters chasing whatever it sees and all within the claustrophobic confines of the polar ice cap station. The action goes on forever and ever and ever, and the addition of monsters into the fray is simply overkill.
Why did I read this book?! -I could barely stomach Amazonia, now that I think about it!
