Now being offered as an International BOOKRING.
I am willing to LEND books from my personal collection on the condition that you send them back to me when you're done. Please see my profile for details.

Book Description
In Laurell K. Hamilton's New York Times bestselling novels, it's often hard to tell the good from the evil. Just ask Anita Blake. She seems to be developing a soft spot in her heart for vampires—one in particular. So, when an arsonist's flames begin licking at St. Louis's undead, it's up to Anita to save the very monsters she's sworn to destroy....

"Good girls do not have premarital sex, especially with the undead....
"But here I was, doing it. Me, Anita Blake, turned into coffin bait. Sad, very sad... You can't trust anyone who sleeps with the monsters...."

*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*

I didn't like this one quite as much as the previous books in the series, which is funny because a lot of others actually thought it was even better. But it's a definite must-read for fans of the Anita Blake series!

  • The above list order may be modified at any time to accomodate new participants or those who withdraw from the ring. So you should always refer to the list included in this journal entry before mailing the book after you've finished with it.
  • After messaging the next person in the list for their address, you should allow at least a week for a reply, to allow for vacations, etc. You may also want to send more than one PM if they don't reply the first time since BookCrossing PMs sometimes get lost in transit. In Search Of (ISO) posts in the Bookring Forum also work well. And of course, remember to check their profile page in case they've posted news of their whereabouts, or an email address that is more reliable than BookCrossing PMs. If you still haven't heard from them after 1-1/2 to 2 weeks, skip them and move on to the next person in the list.
  • Please post a journal entry here (1) when you first receive the book so we all know it has arrived safely, and (2) after you've finished reading it and are ready to send it along. Of course, please include your thoughts and opinions on the book itself too. :)
  • For courtesy sake, please try not to keep this book for more than 4-6 weeks as others are also waiting to read it. If you don't think you can get to the book in that timeframe, you can request to be skipped over and/or added to the end of the ring instead. Just use your best judgement so as not to hold up the ring for all the participants waiting behind you.
  • Late particpants are welcome—PM me if you'd like to join. Be sure to specify which bookrings you'd like to join, as well as your shipping preferences. If you're joining the ring after it's already begun shipping, know that your place in the list will be determined based on your geographic location in conjunction with what is best for the other participants.
  • Please do not ask to join any of my rings if you're not a responsible and reliable BookCrosser. If you happen to see someone in the list who you believe is questionable, please let me know immediately. I do research names I don't recognize and use a number of methods for spotting bad Crossers, but I certainly appreciate any additional info.
  • Remember that at the end of the list, THIS BOOK SHOULD BE RETURNED TO ME, not released into the wild. I enjoy rereading my favorite books over time, and lend them out to other people in my life too, who are not necessarily members of BookCrossing.
  • Note that while I'll certainly take your shipping preferences into account during list ordering, I don't like to stick the same people with International shipping costs every time, particularly for a series of 10+ books such as this. So if you plan to participate in the rings for the entire series, at least 10 of which will be International, I may ask you if you'd be willing to ship Internationally even if you've requested not to at the beginning. I'll try to minimize this, especially if I have enough International shippers to pass the cost around to, but just in case, I figured I'd bring it up so you're not surprised if I approach you about it later.
  • In addition, I like to ask the US participants of my rings who are shipping overseas to consider all shipping options in addition to surface mail. Particularly with lightweight books such as these, Air Mail or Global Priority Mail (GPM) is sometimes a more efficient shipping option for certain countries, sometimes costing as little as 50 cents more, certainly worth it to cut the shipping time down by a month or two. I've even come across a few cases where the small GPM envelope (into which these books fit) is even cheaper than surface mail!

THANKS AND HAPPY READING!

Books 5 thru 8 of the Anita Blake series are heading off to NeedSun in Canada later today (22-Dec-2005) via Air Mail.

The bookrings aren't going to start right away... I need the 4th book to get a little further along first. J, I'll be in contact with you directly to let you know when it's safe for each book to leave your nest and begin it's journey. :) (I need to allow a bit more time between each book like we did between books 3 and 4; the first 3 were too close together and arrived out of order to some people because of that.)

Enjoy these... and the other little goody I enclosed for ya. Happy Holidays!

I received the box of books just before New Years Day. I can't wait to read these, the next four in the Anita Blake series. When I emptied the box I also found a beautiful bookmark. Cherie, thank you so much.

It is really hard to choose which book has been my favorite so far because so much time has elapsed since I have read them but this one definitely ranks up there. There wasn't that breathless non-stop action that made me have trouble seeing how Anita could possibly still be standing. There was alot about relationships, which is what I like best about books.

Cherie, thank you for sharing these books with me. I wanted to pick up the next one right away but so many other reading obligations had to come first.

I PMed thegoaliegirl yesterday for her address. As always, I will edit this entry when I actually get the book into the post.

This was sent today by air to Morpha. Thegoaliegirl told me that she got a hold of another copy and asked to be skipped.

Hamilton continues to explore the nuances of vampire and shapeshifter culture through the eyes of Anita; Necromancer, Lupa to a pack of werewolves, protector of a pack of wereleopards, lover of the Master Vampire of St. Louis, the Executioner, who kills without thought or malice when she has to.
I agree with CheriePie, this is not my favorite of this series.
My favorite quote:
"I'd managed not to dwell on the thought that we were about to walk across a floor that might collapse underneath us, then walk under it and wait for it to collapse on top of us, while wading through water full of coffins and vampires. What could be better?"
Thanks CheriePie for sharing this spiral.

I couldn't put this book down. Its an excellent read! Its now on its way to the next bookcrosser on the bookring.

Brief Overview:

Burnt Offerings begins as Anita agrees to help both the police and fire departments track down a possible psychic firestarter. This arsonist has already targeted the vampires in New Orleans and San Francisco. Seems that St. Louis is now on the list.
A second plot quickly comes into play when a romantic dinner is interrupted by several vampires from Jean-Claude's past. These members of the European vampire council have come to St. Louis to demand revenge for the death of another member of the council at Anita's hands (Oliver from "Circus of the Damned"). They challenge Jean-Claude's entire "family" to a series of "games" that only the strongest can survive.
To further complicate a complicated situation, Anita finds her self in the role of protector of the werewolf and wereleopard members of Jean-Claude's "family". Her werewolf ex-boyfriend, Richard, the pack's alpha, hasn't chosen another lupa so Anita remains their third in command. Since she killed the alpha of the wereleopards, Anita is also considered the leoparde lionne.
Anita finds herself going back and forth between police investigations and the challenge at Circus of the Dammed. It is only at the very end that the elements of both situations come together. We readers are finally allowed to see not only who is responsible for the fires but how they are related to the challenge organized by the council.

Yay! Checked the mailbox this morning to see if anything came over the weekend and my day just got so much better!

I actually finished this some time back, but finances haven''t been as good this summer and I''ve been slow getting stuff mailed out when it''s going overseas. I do have Margih''s address, and when she sent it to me she mentioned that she was a little behind on these books, so I thought a small delay on my part wouldn''t hurt too much. I should be able to get this in the mail on the 15th, which is payday.

As to the book itself, I enjoyed it as I always do with Anita Blake. One of my favorite characters is Edward, who did not figure in this one, but I still enjoyed it.

I have to say that this was, plotwise, one of the weakest books in the series. After reading in I have a hard time remembering what the book was about. I felt that there were too many characters and an abundance of plotlines. The best thing about this book was that it made the triumvirate a bit more aware of their bond to eachother and thus moves the general plot forward.

I have the address to Gypsyrose02 and will send it on as soon as possible.

this arrived toda. yay! thankyou. will get to it asap.

i dont kno what it is. Maybe its just cos ive read so many of them, but they all seem to blend together. same sorta story lines.
I did find the underwater basement scene freaky and the end had me rivited.
anyways onto the next reader.
