I found the beginning of the book interesting but as it went on and the sections shifted between the present and the past I became a bit lost and so found the reading a bit labourious. Having NO knowledge of the USA college system (or any college system for that matter) the references to Ivy and Princeton and their customs were lost on me. I liked the friendship of the four friends but felt there wasn't continuity at times. I found I had to work out who was who many times. The references to the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili and its riddles at times lost me. I wondered that so much could have happened in such a short time with the 4 friends and yet no major outside influences seemed to touch them. As I got near the last 100 pages the pace picked up again and I finished the book quickly. I was intrigued enough to look up references to the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili to see what it looked like.

I was 100 pages into this novel before it finally grabbed my attention, but then I was hooked. Beautifully written and great character development. If you're hoping this is like the Da Vinci Code then you'll be disappointed; this is definitely not a fast-paced adventure thriller. But, that isn't to say it's not a good read; it is a wonderful read. Thanks for sharing Funkybamboozle.

Journal Entry 10 by Fleebo on Monday, November 29, 2004
Received this morning from fushmush, thanks! I'm already reading it, thanks to a timely server crash at work. It is looking very interesting indeed.

Journal Entry 11 by Fleebo on Tuesday, November 30, 2004
Undergrads. Ugh. I suspect that the "traditions" of universities in my own area have not yet evolved into anything seriously ridiculous, like those of Princeton, only because they are so many hundreds of years younger than American (and English) colleges.
This is an engrossing book. The Renaissance pseudo-history, mixed with the real stuff, is fascinating. I didn't know the historical origin of the term "bonfire of the vanities" before. And the present day story is quite compelling too, despite (what seems to me) overreactions by all involved when things get hot.
I read somewhere a suggestion that the greatest heights in art and thinking have always been achieved during times of turbulence, such as in the chaotic Medici's Florence. I hope that that's not true, for it would follow that peace is more likely to inspire mediocrity, and I like both peace and greatness...
Recommended. Thanks for sharing this book! It will be moving on to e-i-pi as soon as I have an address.

This was such a great book - everything The Da Vinci Code was (compelling, intelectual, excellent) AND everything The Da Vinci Code wasn't (well written, with great characterisation). Made me want to be back at Uni - though I don't remember it being quite so exciting. I really enjoyed this book - fantastic holiday reading over Christmas.

Thanks Funkybamboozle, it'll be off to ravenbear asap.

This was a great read, unputdownable. I opened the parcel yesterday, and finished it at 1am last night. Thoroughly recommend it to everyone. Now I want to read the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, and I believe it is online, but haven't done a search for it yet.

It is being posted on today.

Was really looking forward to this after seeing it was reviewed as like The Da Vinci Code but better written. I loved the Da Vinci Code , yes it was a pot boiler but I loved it anyway. This book however failed to live up to my expectations, it wasn't a page turner and I found these college boys very egotisical and elitist and couldn't warm to them. Why did he want to do his friend's thesis? Why did his girlfriend make him choose between her and the book. Load of twaddle.

Journal Entry 20 by senna1 from Parafield Gardens, South Australia Australia on Sunday, May 1, 2005
Received this in the post today and forgot that I had signed up for it. I have one bookring before it, then I'll be straight into it!

I just couldn't get into this book. I tried and I tried but it just didn't grab me. Sorry to those that enjoyed it but this just wasn't my cup of tea. Mostly when I labour over a book (which I really think you shouldn't have to) I am rewarded but I didn't feel rewarded in this instance. :-( Will send off to Crimson-tide asap.

Journal Entry 22 by wingcrimson-tidewing from Balingup, Western Australia Australia on Wednesday, June 15, 2005
Caught in the mail today. I have three ahead of it in the pile so will get to at as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 23 by wingcrimson-tidewing from Balingup, Western Australia Australia on Friday, July 29, 2005
Very slow start to this one for me I'm afraid - it took me about 150 pages to get into it and more than mildly interested. I found all the initial stuff about Princeton University very "preppy" and pretentious and overdone.

It did pick up though. I found the historical sections interesting, but have no idea how accurate it all is, and enjoyed the riddles and the ciphers and the hunt for the true meaning of the book. The action on the campus was incredibly melodramatic and really quite unbelievable - in fact there were unbelievable aspects to it all the way through.

Characterisation? Pretty ho hum for me. After the big action scenes were over most of them were acting very much out of character considering how much emphasis was put on their friendship.

Overall a moderately interesting read - but I was disappointed.

Here is an online version of the text of the "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili":

Off to puppymummy next as Moimeme is no longer in need of a copy apparently.

Journal Entry 24 by puppymummy from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, August 9, 2005
They always come at once. This is the second one today - so I will try to get to it as soon as possible, but it won't be able to be straight away.

Journal Entry 25 by puppymummy from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Thursday, September 8, 2005
I absolutely loved this, my brain felt stretched after all of the ciphers and I also had no idea about where the 'bonfire of the vanities' came from. It was very complex with regard to all of the characters, which confused me a little, but I really enjoyed reading it and felt that I was learning things at the same time - history was never something I studied, and I have become a lot more interested in the Renaissance, might do some more reading on it!
I was in Collins the other day, and they had audiobooks on sale for $25. One of them was 'The Rule of Four', and so I had to have my own copy! Today I was listening to it at work with a colleague, the story is just as good when read again (particularly now I have worked out who the characters are!)
Will be posted back home tomorrow, I thought I'd finish it last weekend but it took a bit longer than I thought.

Journal Entry 26 by Funkybamboozle from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, September 29, 2005
