This book was fun to read. Oprah had suggested it on her show and it's one of the few she has recommended that I enjoyed. I was amazed how a man could express the feelings so clearly that a woman would feel and think. Wally Lamb did a great job with the main character. I have kept this book as part of my permanent collection. I will gladly loan this book if Lil'Alaskan recommends you as a good returnee. :-) I was disappointed reading Wally Lamb's "This Much I know Is True" which is proof to the pudding that it is better not to read strictly by the authors.

I am returning this book to its owner - Alaska Mimi

I originally read this book in 1997 when it was an Oprah book selection. But, recently as I thought back about the book, I couldn’t remember anything about the story so I decided to read it again. The very odd thing is, even while I read it this second time, I still did not remember anything about the characters or the story. The only thing I remembered and the only thing I still hold true is that it is still amazing to me how a male author was so able to capture the feelings and emotions of a woman main character. The main character in the story is Dolores Price and Wally Lamb is able to bring her to life in a way I’ve not ever experienced before. But, Dolores is such an unlikable character that I found myself forcing myself to continue the book. She is rude, crude, and basically a horrible, sad, confused, and angry woman. Obviously, her problems are warranted but it was depressing and tiring to wade through Dolores’ angry moods for most of the 464 pages. The book is dark and very depressing and there are many times when we think Dolores is going to pull herself up, but then she slides right back down into despair and darkness again. I had little sympathy for her and found that I pitied her more than anything else. The book is very well written and the characters are definitely multidimensional but the story is so dark…maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for it this time around.
