I'm keeping track of quotations as I read, an idea I first spotted in tania-in-nc's profile. I glance over the page where I stop reading each day, searching for humor, insight, imagery, or just a catchy turn of phrase.

"I don't like mysteries, which is why I want to solve them. It bothers me that there are things I don't know."

"And if you go so far as to picture the place as it looks, you get this Poe-like image of the ultimate dim Thule, a dark landscape of dead cattle and sheep, bloating and rotting on the fields, vultures feeding on their infected flesh."

"In truth, it wasn't claustrophobia that was troubling him. Like most men of courage and action, myself included, Max didn't like a danger he couldn't pull his gun on."

"There was a saying that in Manhattan the present was so strong, it obscured the past. But here, the past was so strong, it obscured the present."

"So, Fredric Tobin, cool and dandy viniculturist, a man who seemed in control, was a gambler. But if you thought about it, was there a bigger gamble than the grape crop every year? The fact was, grapes were still experimental here, and so far, so good. No blight, no diseases, no frosts or heat spells. But one day, Hurricane Anabelle or Zeke was going to blow a billion grapes into the Long Island Sound, like the biggest tub of Kool Aid ever."

"The wonderful thing about America is that there are more antiques in circulation than were originally made."

6/24: This book will be accompanying me on vacation to Colorado, where it first started its journey. I will finish reading it and then release it, possibly into one of siriradha's BookCrossing zones. I will update this journal entry to reflect my thoughts when I finish reading.

Update 6/26: I finished reading this competent mystery-thriller. The narrator is a bit of an arrogant maverick, but he's strangely likeable anyway. While the final scenes stretch credibility, that's perhaps to be expected with this genre. An enjoyable reading experience.
